Poker News - Online player wins 2008

Online player wins 2008

Jorbeck, from Stockholm, Sweden, won his seat in the tournament through an online satellite at PartyPoker and defeated several pros to win the 2008 season of Late Night Poker.

The final table included Eddy Scharf, Surinder Sunar, Roland de Wolfe, Andy Black, Ian Frazer, Maria Demetriou and David Tighe.

"To win an event as prestigious as Late Night Poker against Europe's top professionals in my first live event is quite something," said Jorbeck. "I've been playing online poker for around four years with relatively small stakes and never thought something like this would happen to me."

Jorbeck made it to the final table through Heat 5 of the event, where he was pitted against fellow online qualifier Jon Parsons as well as Joe Beevers, Liam Flood, Rene Mouritsen, Agnieszka Rylik and Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott. Conquering Heat 5 earned Jorbeck a seat at the grand final.

When the grand final began, Jorbeck was probably not favored to win, but it didn't take long for him to start making his mark on the table.

Andy Black took out the first player, banishing British pro Maria Demetriou to the rail when his pocket kings held up against her pocket queens. Black then took out Ian Frazer as well with A-K against A-T, and a king on the flop paired up Black.

Then Jorbeck stepped in to start doing some damage of his own. Eddy Scharf was all-in with A-Q against Jorbeck's T-9, and a nine on the river sealed Scharf's fate.

Roland de Wolfe also stepped up the action, taking out David Tighe and then Surindar Sunar, leaving just de Wolfe, Jorbeck and Black at the table.

Despite a dominating start, Black was the next out after Jorbeck crippled him with a set of jacks against his A-2. He was all-in next hand with his big blind and couldn't find a hand to back him up.

That left Jorbeck and de Wolfe to battle heads-up in a match that looked like a lock for de Wolfe. He was running well, but then went card-dead toward the end of the match, and Jorbeck claimed the win.

"Roland played really well throughout but I started to relax and adopt a more aggressive approach when we were three handed," said Jörbeck.

During heads-up the balance of power swung a number of times before Jörbeck 's A-T took down de Wolfe's K-3. The flop came down AA-K and the Swede's set gave him victory.

"I really, really fancied this, but in the end it just wasn't my day," de Wolfe said after his defeat.

The final-table results were:

Place Name Country Prize
1st Andreas Jorbeck Sweden $125,000
2nd Roland de Wolfe England $75,000
3rd Andy Black Ireland $50,000
4th Surinder Sunar England $30,000
5th David Tighe England $20,000
6th Eddy Scharf Germany $12,500
7th Ian Frazer England $10,000
8th Maria Demetriou England $7,500

"Andreas' achievement is huge when you consider that every other player at that final table was an aggressive pro, and that he was the only online qualifier who made the final," said a PartyPoker spokesman. "Credit must also go to Roland de Wolfe - finishing runner-up in Late Night Poker and the Premier League is very impressive."

Jorbeck is a telecom business development manager back in Stockholm. Despite winning this event, he doesn't see himself turning poker into a profession.

"I am not a big player so have no huge plans on the horizon; poker is just a hobby. I will use some of my prize money on a bankroll but will invest the majority in stocks and shares," Jorbeck said. "My strategy throughout the tournament was to sit back, keep out of trouble and loosen up and try and relax when we were shorthanded. If possible, I would get others to do the dirty work for me and get involved in lots of hands. I was so surprised to even get through my heat considering I was up against the likes of the Devilfish and Joe Beevers."

This won't be the last of Jorbeck on the live tournament circuit, though. He also won a seat in the PartyPoker Million VI on the PartyPoker site and will be setting sail on the cruise in May.

Poker Room Review: Isleta Casino and Resort, Albuquerque, NM
The Isleta poker room, located about ten minutes south of downtown Albuquerque, right off Interstate 25, is one of the oldest rooms in New Mexico. I first played there in 1998, well before the huge poker boom and the resulting expansion...

Two top pros host successful fundraisers

On March 13 in San Francisco, Todd Brunson hosted a charity poker tournament that benefited the Leo Brien Foundation. The organization's main cause is Camp Okizu, which is a retreat for children who have cancer. Both professional poker players and online sites came out in force to support the Leo Brien Foundation.

World Poker Tour champions Roy "The Oracle" Winston and Hoyt Corkins were part of the proceedings, and they were joined by Kathy Liebert, Layne Flack and Allen Kessler. Online poker rooms such as Doyle's Room, Full Tilt and Ultimate Bet provided gift bags for all the participants, who enjoyed not only the poker tournament but also a silent auction that raised a good deal of funds for the organization.

As much as to benefit an excellent organization, what attendees were eager for was the chance to play poker against some of the best in the game. The final table came down to Kathy Liebert and amateur Doug Fowler.

Liebert took the second-place prize, a WSOP Academy package and a 1,500-piece Full Tilt Poker chip set, and joked about how the Academy will help her game. Fowler, for winning the tournament, will fly to Las Vegas to spend a weekend with Todd Brunson, complete with travel and accommodation.

Overall, the tournament and the silent auction raised nearly $20,000 for the Leo Brien Foundation. For more information on the work of the Foundation or to make a contribution, visit LeoBrienFoundation.com.

Last Sunday night (March 16) saw thousands come together online to support another charitable organization and one of its strongest voices, Jennifer Harman.

The Jennifer Harman Animal Lovers Poker Tournament was an online event sponsored by Full Tilt for the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The $10 tournament, with half of the entry fee going to the organization, was expected to draw around 1,000 to 1,500 players for the event. By the time registration had ended on Sunday, an astounding 3,009 people showed up to support a cause that Harman holds in high regard.

Perhaps the star power of the tournament is what drew the large crowd. Professionals such as Harman, her husband Marco Traniello, Erik Seidel, Clonie Gowen, Andy Bloch and many other professionals on the Full Tilt roster were at the tables and they were joined by several stars from the extreme sports world, including two-time X Games champion Ross Powers and wakeboarder Parks Bonifay.

While online player "Jzeeee" was the eventual champion of the tournament, taking a nice payday of $2,235, the real winner was the animals at the no-kill shelter of the Nevada SPCA. The 3,009 players provided a $15,000 donation to the group and Full Tilt matched that amount, making the total haul for the Nevada SPCA over $30,000.

Harman will be hosting another poker tournament to benefit the Nevada SPCA on April 18, following the inaugural tournament she sponsored last year. Last year's live tournament raised $130,000 for the Nevada SPCA and it is expected to have many of the same players donating their time and funds for a worthy cause. Visit NevadASPCA.org to learn more about the group or to make a private donation.

These two events demonstrate that poker can be a force for the good. Top professionals in the world of poker will no doubt continue the positive trend.

poker_players_alliance_logo3.gifThe Poker Players Alliance announced today that it would be launching its Litigation Support Network, which will provide legal advice and refer members to attorneys who have expressed interest in helping with poker-related issues, according to a press release on the PPA’s Web site.

The resource will be free to PPA members:

According to the release:

“As both the popularity of poker and the membership of PPA continue to grow, the Litigation Support Network is an opportunity to provide even more value to our members,” said PPA Chairman Former Senator Alfonse D’Amato. “With the myriad local, state and federal laws impacting poker, the Litigation Support Network is an important service that our members can and should use, and I encourage attorneys who want to defend poker players and this great American game of skill to join this effort.”

Whole thing here.

The attorneys being linked to this service are also prepared to litigate that poker is a game of skill, not of chance. The network is being headed by Patrick Fleming, who also heads the PPA’s efforts in New Hampshire.

Another Canadian captures Full Tilt freeroll win

Lawrence, who plays as Dirt04, signed up at Full Tilt Poker through PokerListings.com. That entitled him entry into the weekly $3,000 freeroll after he racked up 150 player points during the seven-day qualification period prior to the event.

The fact that Lawrence, a 31-year-old road construction worker, plays poker every chance he can get, and plays at Full Tilt Poker two times a week, probably helped.

"It's great if you like to play tournaments, and you have more variety in cash games if you like to play games like Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo, Omaha Hi-Lo," Lawrence said about Full Tilt Poker, "[plus] you never have a problem finding a table."

Lawrence has been playing poker regularly for about four years. He got started playing with his friends.

"A group of my friends would get together and have a game," he said. "And then one of my friends started playing online so I thought I would give it a try."

That led him to one of his biggest poker wins - a $130,000 cash in the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event. He won his way to that event through another PokerListings.com exclusive freeroll with another poker site.

"So last year's PokerListings freeroll was better; I won the $11k package, which I turned into $130,000," Lawrence said. "The Full Tilt win was great too. So now you can see why I love PokerListings.com."

Lawrence described the Full Tilt freeroll as having a pretty solid playing field.

"But you always have some crazy players you can sit back and wait for to make a mistake and then capitalize," he said.

His win came down to his A-6 off-suit versus the other player's pocket fours. With a 3-1 chip lead, Lawrence raised it up, and the other player re-raised all-in. After Lawrence called, the board brought him the nut straight to the ace.

The final-table results for the March 15 freeroll were:

PokerListings.com players also have access to exclusive satellites for $12,500 prize packages to the 2008 WSOP* Main Event. Players who signed up at Full Tilt Poker through PokerListings.com and who earn 300 player points during the qualifying periods will gain entry into the WSOP freerolls.

The qualifying period for the March 23 freeroll just ended Wednesday, but players have until April 2 to qualify for the April 6 freeroll.

PartyPoker.com Premier League back tomorrow

The PartyPoker Premier League, a groundbreaking poker event that was developed by matchroom sport, will kickoff another 15 week run with an episode airing on Channel 4 at 12:10 a.m. on Tuesday/Wednesday. The format features 12 of the world's elite poker players fighting for a piece of the $1 million prize pool.

Nine players from last season's event returned along with several new faces this year including Alexander Kravchenko, Annie Duke and Marcel Luske.

All 12 players played six times in the preliminary stages with the leading four players qualifying for a seat at the final table while the next four battled it out in heads-up matches for the final two seats. Each player brought $60,000 of their own money while PartyPoker.com added an extra $280,000 to make the pool $1 million. Quite an increase considering last year the prize pool was $500,000.

Finnish poker sensation Juha Helppi outlasted 12 stellar players last year and a final table that included Phil Hellmuth. Helppi beat German pro Eddy Scharf in heads-up play to win $125,000. This season the first place finisher will be awarded $250,000.

Television commentary will be provided by Jesse May and Rolande De Wolfe.

The stakes are higher than ever before and with a table that includes Phil Hellmuth, Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott, Tony G, Juha Helppi, Annie Duke and Marcel Luske the first episode is sure to be a blockbuster.
