Poker author James McManus has an article in the upcoming edition of The New Yorker that focuses on the poker-playing side of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. McManus, best known to many players as the author of the excellent Positively Fifth Street, does a quick writeup on Obama’s card-playing history and then wraps it up with a few presidential poker nuggets.
Excerpt:
Obama never played for high stakes. Only on a very bad night could a player drop two hundred dollars in these games, typical wins and losses being closer to twenty-five bucks. Link describes Obama as a “calculating” cardplayer, avoiding long-shot draws and patiently waiting for strong starting hands. “When Barack stayed in, you pretty much figured he’s got a good hand,” former Senator Larry Walsh once told a reporter, neglecting to note that maintaining that sort of rock-solid image made it easier for Obama to bluff.

OK-Sarah was born to play poker. Her first recorded words were "I raise the pot." Thousands of poker players knew that she was on her way because when her mother Carol was pregnant with Sarah, Carol would sit beside me knitting while I was playing poker with them.
Sarah graduated with honors from UNLV and will be returning to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas to attain her masters in hotel and gaming management.

The Melbourne Herald Sun is reporting today that two men have been arrested in connection with the robbing of poker player Jason Potter. Potter was robbed of $30,000 at knifepoint earlier this month during the Aussie Millions.
From the MHS:
Detectives in Melbourne executed two search warrants last night and arrested two men.
Dwayne Johnstone, 32, of St Albans, and Vhyharn Arumughasamu, 27, of Wheeler’s Hill, appeared in an out of sessions hearing overnight, each charged with one count of armed robbery.
They were remanded in custody to appear in the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court today.
