Poker News - Ultimate Player Party for 2008 Canadian Open

Ultimate Player Party for 2008 Canadian Open

The Maxim/Coors Light "Ultimate Players Party" will be presented by HeadsUp Entertainment Inc on March 5th and will kickoff this year's COPC.

Taking place at the Snatch Rock n' Roll Lounge in Calgary, Alberta, the party will feature an intimate performance by Suzie McNeil. McNeil is most well-known for being the runner up in the popular reality television show Rock Star INXS and is nominated for the 2008 New Artist of the Year at this year's Juno Awards.

Also confirmed to be attending is actress/poker player/bombshell Jennifer Tilly. Raised in Victoria, B.C., Tilly has won numerous accolades in the acting world but has made quite the splash in the poker world and in 2005 won the $1,000 Ladies' No-Limit Texas Hold'em event. Tilly is currently dating poker pro Phil "Unabomber" Laak who will also be attending the party.

2004 LAPC winner Antonio Esfandiari will also be taking part in the festivities as well as 1996 Main Event winner Huckleberry Seed. Everybody's favorite Canadian poker pro, "Yukon" Brad Booth, will also be making an appearance.

The party will be hosted by the girls from Coors Light, Maxim Magazine and HeadsUp Entertainment so it's doubtful the night will get boring.

"This will be a night like Calgary has never seen," said HeadsUp Entertaminment's president and CEO Kelly B. Kellner. "With some of the Canada's most beautiful women, international celebrities, poker pros and phenomenal entertainment this is a must attend event and a rare opportunity to attend a Maxim party!"

The party begins at 7 p.m. with a limited number of VIP tickets going on sale to the public on Feb. 16 through Ticketmaster.

Poker After Dark - champion style

Chris Ferguson, Johnny Chan, Huckleberry Seed, Jamie Gold, Berry Johnston and Phil Hellmuth will all be the center of attention throughout this week's episodes of the popular six-handed format poker show.

Last week the show was themed around "Hecklers" and with Mike Matusow, Phil Hellmuth, Jean-Robert Bellande, Sam Grizzle, Gavin Smith and Shawn Sheikhan it did not disappoint. Hellmuth had one of his famous blow-ups when Bellande refused to show his hand after Hellmuth mucked. Taking it all in stride Hellmuth actually managed to win and is having a solid ran during this season's Poker After Dark win two wins under his belt.

The Poker Brat will have a chance at a hat-trick by winning the world champion's table. It would mark the first time a player has won three times in one season of Poker After Dark.

Hellmuth will certainly have some stiff competition, however. Chan, also known as the Orient Express, is the only player at this week's table with two World Champion titles and he would have had three if it wasn't for Hellmuth.

Younger poker fans may not be that familiar with Johnston but the man brings a rock solid poker resume. Johnston won the Main Event in 1986 and has cashed 10 times in the main event, which is more than any other player.

Ferguson, or "Jesus" if you prefer, is one of the most recognizable players on the poker circuit today. Ferguson came to fame when he took his trademark cowboy hat and sunglasses all the way to the final table of the 2000 Main Event and after a heads-up battle with T.J. Cloutier emerged victorious.

Seed won the Main Event in 1996 and is renowned for his ability to win prop bets. He once stood on his head for over 50 minutes to win such a bet.

Finally Gold is probably the most controversial world champion at this table. Gold won $12 million for taking down the Main Event in 2006 but reportedly failed to pay Crispin Leyser, a friend who had staked him. The issue was finally sorted out but not until the damage to Gold's reputation was already done. At the poker table Gold is known for being a brash player and has said he wants to be the world's greatest bluffer.

Poker After Dark's "World Champions" will air all this week. To learn more or find out what time it will be televised in your area go to www.pokerafterdark.com.

Nesson to speak at London seminar Tuesday

The seminar, titled "The Bush Administration's Criminalization of Online Gaming and the Implications for Global Free Trade" hosted by the Institute of Economic Affairs, will focus on the actions of the current presidential administration towards the overseas companies that offer online gaming and poker.

It is free for the public to attend and will take place at 6:30 p.m. (London time) in The Arthur Seldon Room, at 2 Lord North Street, Westminster, SW1 (door on Great Peter Street.).

People interested in attending are asked to RSVP to IEA Reception by emailing iea@iea.org.uk.

Professor Nesson will be joined by several prominent and knowledgeable members of the trade community. He will sit beside Dr. Sallie James, a Policy Analyst at the Center for Trade Policy Studies and the Cato Institute, and Lode Van Den Hende, a Senior Associate of Herbert Smith LLP, based in Brussels, specializing in E.U. competition and regulation.

The seminar will be chaired by John Blundell, the Director General and Ralph Harris Fellow of the IEA.

Some of the subjects that will be covered are those that Professor Nesson has discussed previously in his writings on the GPSTS website (gpsts.org) and on popular television shows such as Comedy Central's The Colbert Report.

The ongoing trade dispute between the U. S., the European Union and several other countries will be at the forefront with additional discussion on the latest developments in ongoing challenges to the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act, enacted by President Bush in 2006.

Other subjects that will be broached include:

  • the complaint filed by the Remote Gambling Association in December 2007 with the EC against the United States for discrimination based on violations of WTO rules, asserting that the U.S. Department of Justice is in violation of international law by threatening and pressing criminal prosecutions and other actions against foreign online gaming operators while allowing domestic U.S. gaming operators to flourish,
  • Costa Rica's recent January challenge in the WTO regarding the UIGEA (which could unravel the agreement that was reached between the U. S. and the E. U.)
  • the implications on global trade

Professor Nesson, for his part, sees the problems that the UIGEA has brought and the problems that are associated.

"The conflict between the U. S. government and the online community over online poker and other forms of betting will not go away. There is growing concern about its impact on global trade, domestic U.S. law, and Internet freedom and regulation," he said.

300 points nets mike24788 a WPT seat

To qualify for the freeroll, players had to have signed up at Full Tilt Poker through PokerListings.com, then earn 300 player points during the month-long qualifying period. A total of 138 qualifiers showed up to play the event last weekend, and Michael Eberle walked away the winner.

Eberle, who is a chief privacy officer and IT auditor living in Reichenbach-Steegen, Germany, has been playing poker between one and two years now. His biggest poker win previously was $1,000, and now he has a $12,000 prize package to a WPT event.

"I did not expect anything at all when I started playing," Eberle said about the freeroll. "During the tournament I set moving targets: final 5 tables, final 3 and final table. When I came to the final table being in quite a good shape, I realized for the first time my good opportunity to win the tournament."

Eberle said when play was down to three, he and another player were quite short-stacked, and when he got down to heads-up, his opponent had about 10 times more chips than he did.

But the 29-year-old, who enjoys the combination of fun, strategy and math that comes with the game of poker, was able to battle back. On a final hand of Q-9 against his opponent's Q-7, he solidified the win.

So far, Eberle isn't nervous about taking on a major live event or the major pro players who will likely be at the tournament.

"Maybe it would feel a little bit weird playing against players like Dan Harrington or Phil Gordon, whose books I have read," he said.

Of course, he'll also be able to head back to PokerListings.com, which he visits daily already, to get playing advice. Plus he can continue his weekly visits to Full Tilt Poker to practice.

"[PokerListings.com is] a great source for everyone who is interested in poker," Eberle said and he commented that Full Tilt Poker is the best online poker site.

The next chance players will have to win a WPT prize package in the exclusive PokerListings.com and Full Tilt Poker freeroll is March 16. The qualifying period for the freeroll is Feb. 12 - March 13.

PokerListings.com and Full Tilt Poker have also teamed up to start dishing out seats to the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event. The first freeroll is scheduled for Feb. 24, and PokerListings.com players who earn 300 points between Feb. 6 and Feb. 20 will get a shot at a $12,500 WSOP prize package.

EUCardPlayer.com published a handy cliff notes to the current political state of online poker in Europe, where the legal picture is understandably muddled as the EU tries to piece together a coherent policy out of the wildly varying approaches taken by member nations.

The Cardplayer article, written by Brendan Murray, offers a quick drill down of the major movers in the EU when it comes to online poker. Excerpt:

It was never going to be easy to reconcile the interests of the 27 member states of the European Union with the goal of a single economic market, but Internal Markets Commissioner Charlie McCreevy probably never envisioned it would be this hard.

Since the start of 2008, he has watched on as Germany banned online gaming, France stepped back from its hard-line position, Austria instituted a state-run poker room, Netherlands planned the same but got cold feet, Finland considered banning online poker but then suggested the Swedish state-monopoly model may be the way forward, while Sweden’s arbitrary edifice showed signs of crumbling under unrelenting pressure from the European Commission.

Whole thing here.
