PokerStars offering NBC Heads-Up seat

The poker site is offering up the seat for U.S. players through PokerStars.net, where people can play for free and enter the competition.

They'll have to do it fast, though: the qualifying tournaments end Feb. 22, with the winner heading to Caesars Palace in Las Vegas to potentially take on the likes of Barry Greenstein, Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Rousso, Shannon Elizabeth, Greg Raymer and many more.

The prize package for the PokerStars player includes:

  • $20,000 buy-in for the Heads-Up Championship
  • Four nights accommodation in Las Vegas (Feb. 28 to March 2)
  • $1,000 cash for travel

The National Heads-Up Poker Championship brings together 64 poker players on an invitation-only basis. They must battle each other heads-up to move up the player bracket and ultimately get down to the top two players.

Last year Paul Wasicka came out on top to win $500,000. He'll be back again this year to defend his title.

PokerStars.net hosts the only satellite for this invitational event, and it will be the first time in the National Heads-Up Poker Championship's history that one online player will be allowed to take on the pros, athletes and celebrities who've been invited to participate.

Free tournaments run every day at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. (EST) at PokerStars.net until Feb. 22. The NHUPC begins filming in Las Vegas Feb. 28.

Jeff Kimber victorious at GUKPT: Walsall

Before the day started the smart money had to be on Peter Charalambous who had a firm grip on the chip lead with $877,000, whereas Jeff Kimber had a modest $451,000. The situation changed dramatically, however, after some aggressive plays by Kimber in the early going.

In a pivotal hand Nikhil Persaud pushed all-in with A-Q only to have Kimber wake up with A-A. After Persaud's elimination Kimber was in the driver's seat and didn't let up until he had secured victory over Charalambous in heads-up play.

Kimber received £83,910 and a seat in the Champion of Champions for his heroic efforts. Charalambous, meanwhile, had to settle for £48,790.

Kimber is well-known on the English poker circuit: he made a WPT final table in 2006 and won the World Headsup Poker Championship in 2007.

Walsall was a very successful event for the GUKPT; 287 players came out to take part in the poker festivities.

Next up is Leg 3 at the Vic in London. Here's a look at the final-table payouts:

Player: Prize:
1. Jeff Kimber £83,910
2. Peter Charalambous £48,790
3. Dharminder Buttar £35,160
4. Nikhil Persaud £23,680
5. Craig Metcalfe £17,940
6. Charles Denton £14,350

Ivey crushes seda1 for $600k

Eventually, the money flows to the pro.

High-stakes rivals Phil Ivey and the as-yet-unidentified seda1 resumed their ongoing battle at $500/$1,000 No-Limit Hold'em yesterday, and when the smoke cleared this time, Ivey was left sitting with $800k - $600k of that formerly belonging to seda1.

Rumors abound as to the identity of seda1, with speculation on the forums alluding to everyone from fellow pro Barry Greenstein (highly unlikely) to a young silk industry magnate (seda means silk in Spanish) to Tiger Woods (laughable) to rapper Jay-Z (the leading candidate at the moment, with plenty of anecdotal evidence to support the claim).

Whoever he is, he definitely doesn't play like a pro, check-calling his big hands rampantly post-flop and never betting them for value. But he can certainly handle a big bankroll swing.

After a six-hour session of $500/$1,000 blinds at Table Ivey Deathmatch on Full Tilt Poker, it's also inevitable those two now completely dominate the top 10 list of biggest pots won online over the last day, week and month.

Seda1 has dragged a few of those pots his way - maxing out at a $255k pot won with #Ah-#2h - but Ivey has got the best of it by far, taking at least seven pots over $170k and totaling well over $1 million.

Check out all of the pots and hand histories over in the MarketPulse biggest pots section, but here's how the biggest - for a crazy $385,000 - played out:

RizenPopular professional poker player Eric ‘Rizen’ Lynch is back home after successful surgery to remove his gall bladder.

According to a post on his blog, Lynch, who is known by many as an instructor over at PokerXFactor, started experiencing pain late last week and eventually made his way to the hospital, where tests revealed that his gall bladder had essentially stopped functioning.

Lynch is now home and recovering. Excerpt from blog post:

As it turns out, my gall bladder had pretty much ceased functioning and was causing some pretty extreme pain in the process. After running lots of tests etc I finally had it taken out Wednesday and I’m home today. I’m feeling much better, but still a little sore from surgery. I’m going to keep this brief for now since I have a lot of things to do now that I’m home, but wanted to let everyone know I’m home and okay. I have no idea when I’m going to go back to playing, the pain meds I’m on probably aren’t very good for my poker game. I think I’m going to just take a few days getting used to being back home and see what I can and can’t handle, maybe play some cash games where I can quit if I feel I’m not sharp, and generally take it pretty easy.

I’ll keep everyone up to date. I’m pretty tender, but otherwise feeling pretty good.

Whole thing here. Best wishes to Eric from PTP for a speedy recovery (and not just because he’s our best chance of getting new cash game videos over at PXF).
