PartyPoker Premier League, Day 2: Tony G Wins Another Heat
Day 2 of the 2008 edition of the PartyPoker Premier League saw reversals of fortune for some players and a solo overall lead for Tony G, who started the day tied with Roland de Wolfe for first place after they each took down a Day 1...

PartyPoker Premier League, Day 1 – Tony G, Roland de Wolfe Win Heats
The 2008 edition of the PartyPoker Premier league kicked off yesterday at 3 Mills Studio in London, with 12 of the world's top stars battling it out for a million-dollar prize pool. In the PartyPoker Premier League, the invitees...

The Premier League will feature 12 players competing for a $1 million prize pool in a unique format developed by Matchroom Sport.

The participants will play six times in the preliminary stages, and then the leading four players from those heats will progress to the final table. The four runners up from the heats will battle in heads-up matches for the last two seats at the final table.

Participants buy into the game for $60,000, and PartyPoker is adding $280,000 to make the total prize pool $1 million. That's double what it was for last year's Premier League.

So who will be taking on this challenge? Juha Helppi will return to defend his title. Joining him at the tables will be Phil Hellmuth, Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott, Tony G, Andy Black, Ian Fraser, Roland De Wolfe, Vicky coren, Eddy Scharf, Annie Duke, Marcel Luske and Alexander Kravchenko.

"Premier League is something I look forward to for months," said Tony G. "It's the best event in poker in my book. Last year was a disaster for me, and I want to prove it was a freaky event. Only winning this year will make things right for me, and I want to bust Hellmuth so, so hard to get him on a boat back to the U.S."

Right now it looks like PartyPoker's sister site, PartyBets, believes Tony G just might have what it takes to win the Premier League this year. He's favored to win with odds of 6/1.

A PartyBets.com spokesman said, "The early money has been for Tony G but it is so hard to pick a winner in a field so strong. We have also seen a lot of interest in Juha retaining his title."

The event takes place at 3 Mills Studio, London Feb. 10-16 and will be first broadcast on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom in late March and then distributed internationally.

PKR unveils new tournament schedule

"Our new tournament schedule is all about giving our players exactly what they want: more choices, more fun and more chances to win," said Neil Wright, cardroom manager. "We want to show players that we really are committed to providing a poker experience like no other. Our new blinds and payout structure, combined with increased guaranteed prize pools will allow PKR.com to do exactly that."

The revamped schedule will include more player favorites like lower buy-in multi-table sit-and-gos and satellites to major events, as well as offering new and enhanced tournaments, freerolls and satellites.

According to a PKR press release, the new tournament structure is one of the most complete online poker tournament offerings anywhere on the Web and will ensure players get even more value for their money.

The structure of the tournaments has been modified to encourage more skillful play and a wider variety of deep-stacked big buy-in tournaments have been added.

"The introduction of antes adds another dimension to tournaments, making late-stage play even more exciting," said the PKR press release.

PKR's weekends are getting bigger too with the addition of big-money guaranteed touranmetns like the Saturday Showdown and Sunday Classic.

The Saturday Showdown is a $55 buy-in tournament with a $20,000 guaranteed prize pool. The Sunday Classic will offer players a shot at a $25,000 guaranteed prize pool for a $65 buy-in. There will also be a $10,000 Premium freeroll added to the mix to reward loyal players.

Changing up the tournament even more are the introduction of Phase, Terminator and Terminator Xtreme tournaments. PKR has also added even more satellites to bigger events, including the daily $10,000 guaranteed tournament.

PKR is also making the tournaments even bigger. The monthly $50,000 guaranteed tournament has now been upgraded to become the monthly PKR Masters' $75,000 guaranteed tournament. Players get a $5,000 starting stack for a $250 buy-in. They can also win their way in through satellites for as little as $1.28.

"With smaller buy-ins and more ways to enter, players will now have even more chances to play for bigger prizes," PKR said.

French player crowned Titan World Champion

Lelievre finished first in the World Challenge Main Event in December to claim the title of Titan Poker World Champion. Along with his new status came a $100,000 cash prize.

The journey to get to that point took three months, as Titan Poker hosted events for players to win their way into the World Challenge Main Event. To qualify, they had to advance through a series of poker leagues, competing first against their compatriots and then against international players.

The final 56 players advanced to the World Challenge Main Event where they battled for the title of world champion.

The 55 players who didn't win received a share of a $55,000 prize pool.

Following his win, Lelievre said, "Poker is a true passion for me. I started playing poker in 2006, and it was not long before I realized all the passion that poker can provoke. I was so delighted to win the World Challenge Main Event, especially as it was such a close call. I became Titan Poker World Champion with a three of a kind - but just before the pot, I only had enough for the big blind!"

Lelievre said he intends to continue playing poker and fulfill some more of his dreams.

"I'm still very young, and I have a lot to learn, but I believe that I am getting closer and improving all the time," said the 25-year-old.

The World Challenge Tournament is just one of many cash promotions offered by Titan Poker. The online poker room hosts many events with added value for players and it will stage a $2 Million Guaranteed tournament March 2.

m_mcdonald.jpgIn a series of comments to Canadian newspapers following his big EPT win last week, Mike ‘Timex’ McDonald sounded more like a PSA than an EPT champ - which is probably a good thing for the image of online poker players.

McDonald was profiled in an Orleans Star article following his EPT win. Excerpt:

But the Waterloo, Ont., card shark - who is the youngest poker player to ever win a top-level European tournament - said he has years of experience under his belt despite his young age, and is urging the dreamers to accept reality.

“Realistically, there are a lot more failure stories than there are success stories,” McDonald said Tuesday in an interview from Waterloo, hours after he arrived home from his big win.

“For the vast majority of people, staying away from poker is probably best.”
